PATNA: In a bid to eradicate illiteracy and ensure children's right to
education through enrolment in schools, the state government, in
association with the Bihar Education Project
(BEP), has launched a unique initiative named 'Shiksha Bandhan'. It was
formally launched on the eve of Raksha Bandhan on Tuesday. School-going
children will tie rakhis on the wrists of out-of-school children on
Thursday and inspire them to enrol in schools.
'Shiksha Bandhan' is initially being undertaken by the BEP in 50 schools of Patna district. Ten other private schools, Kilkari Kendra and Bal Bhawan, Patna, have also joined the initiative.
Under the initiative, the students of government-run schools in Patna, especially members of Meena Manch and Bal Sansad, will tie "School Aao Shiksha Rakhi", to out-of-school children and explain to the latter the value of education and motivate them for joining school. They will also be told about the benefits of attending school, like midday meal, uniform, books, scholarships and even bicycles.
The 'Shiksha Bandhan' was formally inaugurated by Patna DM Sanjay Kumar by tying a 'Shiksha Rakhi' on the wrist of a 14-year-old girl with "School Aao" written on it at Kanya Madhya Vidyalaya, Golghar on Tuesday evening. "Shiksha Bandhan is a step towards eradicating illiteracy, as Illiteracy is a curse and the root cause of all social evils like child marriage, malnutrition, infant mortality, population growth etc. The initiative will go a long way in giving impetus to basic education," said the DM.
Unicef, Bihar chief, Dr Yameen Mazumder in his address, said , "It is a novel effort on our part and it is indeed heartening to see the enthusiasm of children in tying 'Shiksha Rakhi' to out-of-school children. I hope the initiative will soon spread to entire Bihar."
It may be mentioned here that 51,108 children are still out of school in Patna district alone, while the figure for Bihar is 2,83,000. District programme officer (DPO), Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, Ram Sagar Singh said, "If we talk about the figure of entire state, Patna's share in out-of-school children is nearly 16 %."
Patna district education officer Arun Sharma and president of Vidyalaya Shiksha Samiti DN Sharma were also present at the launch and tied Shiksha Rakhi to a few children who are not attending school or have been deprived of education.
At the launching ceremony, 'Shiksha Rakhi' was tied to over two dozen out-of-school children and school dropouts by officials as well children. They were also given books, copies, pens, pencils and some sweets.
A Class VI student, Niti, was very enthusiastic about the scheme. "This rakhi, I shall move around with my school mates to nearby slums and tie 'Shiksha Rakhi' to children who are still out of school. I shall also motivate them to come to school as soon as possible."
