Patna boy Shubham Sinha has made the
country proud by bagging the silver medal at the 54th International
Mathematics Olympiad held in Santa Marta, Colombia.
The 11-day Olympiad started on July 18.
Shubham’s father Pankaj Kumar Sinha, an
engineer, said: “Shubham was different since childhood. When he was in
Class V, he once asked: ‘Can you imagine your son being a scientist one
day’? For him, studying subjects such as history was a waste of time as
he had other plans.”
Shubham, 18, took his Class X exam in 2011
from St Xavier’s High School, Patna, and passed his Class XII from
Bosco Public School, Delhi. He believes in healthy competition.
Proud
father Pankaj Kumar Sinha, an engineer by profession added, "When
Shubham was 7 years old, he knew what progressions and
permutations-combinations were. He would sit for hours thinking and
theorizing."
Shubham’s mother Ginni Jakhanwal said:
“Shubham does not study much but he is sharp. He got through the IIT
entrance, but did not opt for it. I am proud that my son wants to do
research and that too in India. He will join the Indian Institute of
Science, Bangalore, to do research in physics and maths.”
Shubham has interest in tabla and sitar
also. He belongs to the family of lawyer Nawal Kishore Prasad, who was
known for his philanthropy during the freedom struggle.
Born
and brought up in the state capital, Shubham wants to open an olympiad
school where students from an early age can be taught to excel at every
level. "I want to see India at the top most position in research. With
the mushrooming of professional and technical education, the study of
fundamental sciences has taken a back seat in Bihar," said Shubham.
The young boy also takes keen interest in music and plays the tabla and the sitar and is passionate about chess and table-tennis. "I wish Shubham brings more laurels to the nation," said his mother Dr Ginni Jakhanwal, an Ayurvedic physician and honorary physician to the Governor of Bihar.
The former Xaverian had also represented India at the 37th Prof Harry Messel International Science School (ISS 2013) held from June 29 to July 13 at the University of Sydney (USYD) where he was awarded an ISS scholarship by the physics foundation of USYD.
