Medical Council of India (MCI) has recognized the degrees awarded by Aryabhat Knowledge University,Patna (AKU) to the students of all the medical colleges functioning under AKU jurisdiction.

Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU), Patna has been established by Government of Bihar for the development and management of educational infrastructure related to technical, medical, management and allied professional education in the state. The objective of the university is to promote the professional education infrastructure to meet the national standard through well advanced course, infrastructure and quality faculty. Bihar lacks in the infrastructure both in the terms of number of institutions and the quality of education. As a result Bihar state has become the major hub of students migrating to the others states for pursuing their education and carrier building for future growth.


The MCI's recognition has come as a pleasant surprise to the medicos who had been agitating for quite some time past for the same. The medicos, who had passed the examination conducted by AKU, were being denied jobs by different organizations owing to non-recognition of their degrees by the MCI.


 Aryabhat Knowledge University vice-chancellor S N Guha said after repeated reminders from the university, the Medical Council of India   has communicated its decision to recognize the medical colleges brought under the university's control and to recognize the degree awarded by the university. MCI secretary Sanjay Srivastava wrote to the university that the MCI has approved the shifting of all government medical colleges from their parent universities to AKU. As many as six government medical colleges attached to different universities in the state were brought under the control of Aryabhat Knowledge University last year and the university has also successfully conducted their examinations and published the results.
The medical colleges functioning under the jurisdiction of  Aryabhat Knowledge University are: Patna Medical College and Nalanda Medical College, both at Patna, Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College, Gaya, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga Medical College, Darbhanga, and Shri Krishna Medical College, Muzaffarpur. Bihar College of Pharmacy has also been affiliated to AKU.
Aryabhat Knowledge University which is presently functioning from Chanakya National Law University campus at Mithapur farm, has initiated necessary steps for starting postgraduation and PhD courses in nanotechnology from this year. It has acquired space for construction of one classroom and two laboratories for the new course and the state government has sanctioned seven posts of teachers, including one professor, two associate professors and four assistant professors, for the course.
