Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, while
addressing mediapersons on Tuesday at his weekly programme, 'janata ke
darbar mein up-mukhyamantri', at his official residence, said, "Earlier,
highest taxpaying businessman were only given certificates, but now the
state would also give cash prizes to honour them."
The Bhamashah award is given at the state and district levels to those traders who pay maximum taxes and have an average growth of 25% in the last three years.
At the state level, awards will be given in three categories - industry, corporate and non-corporate - where the first prize is of Rs 2 lakh followed by Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively. At the regional level, there are two categories. Traders in the bigger areas would be given Rs one lakh, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000, while those in the smaller regions would be given Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 11,000 respectively.
Modi said Bihar is the only state to implement such a scheme. "Every year we would present the awards at a function on June 28 to mark the birth anniversary of Bhamashah," he said.
The deputy CM further said, "Rs 2 lakh incentive that was given to families of traders who died in any accident would now be directly disbursed by the state government through budgetary provisions, instead of involving any insurance companies as middlemen."
The deputy CM, who also holds the finance portfolio, said that after the SLBC meet being held at Rajgir on June 11 in which union finance minister P Chidambaram would also participate, a special meeting of bankers would be held for detailed discussions of finance-related issues in the state. "We would stress on banks opening more branches in the state so that activities of non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) can be put on check," he said.
Earlier, Modi heard several petitioners. Representatives of Pensioner's Association requested him to direct banks to arrange special counters for senior citizens even if for 15 days per month only. Modi said that he would discuss these issues in the upcoming bankers' meet.
Contractual appointments seemed to be another issue affecting many people in the state. A delegation of junior engineers (contractual) of water resource department and another of ITI teachers met Modi with their plea to look into their jobs. However, the deputy CM could only answer that rules and regulations relating to contractual appointments were being formulated and nothing could be done before that.
