When you read the history of India, one period that stands out as remarkable is the Mauryan period. It is remarkable for two reasons. First, it was an Empire that started with nothing but belief in the power of dharma, and expanded to cover the entire Indian sub-continent and beyond. In addition to the Indian sub-continent, it included current Afghanistan and parts of Bactria. Secondly, it was the only time in Indian history that an invader (Greeks in this case) were thrown out militarily that enabled further expansion of the Empire.

Unfortunately, none of the later kings of India had that strategic perspective. This becomes all the more clear after the collapse of the Gupta dynasty when India was ruled by a handful of warring kings. At the same time, tectonic changes were taking place politically and religiously to the west of India. There was a brand new religion called Islam which was iconoclastic and considered Hindu way of living as a brazen violation of their beliefs. Furthermore, many ancient Arab traders considered Hinduism as a distant cousin of the earlier Meccan religion they had successfully vanquished. Indeed, some Arabic texts mention Hindu merchants visiting pre-Islamic Mecca for pilgrimage. [Given that there were 360 deities in Mecca, it is conceivable that some of them were of Hindu origin]. Let us also remember that before the dawn of Islam, the relationship between Hindu kingdoms and Arab traders was very cordial.

So a flourishing India (Hindustan as they called it) with all its magnificent temples that housed "idols" was not only unacceptable to Islam, it was a constant reminder of an unfinished job - the job of eradicating idol worship that started in Mecca. Thus started a series of invasions to bring Hindustan into the greater "Ummah".

Starting with the conquest of Sindh by Mohammad Bin Quasim till Mohammad of Ghor's victory in the battle of Terrain II, there  were literally hundreds of expeditions in an attempt to either loot the riches of India or to incorporate India into the Islamic world. Indeed by 1192, Islam had conquered Delhi and had succeeded in converting India into an Islamic nation (any land that it is ruled by an Islamic ruler where Sharia can be practiced is considered Dar-Al-Islam  or House of Islam).

For the next 666 years (1192-1858), Islam did rule India. Thanks to the British, Islamic rule of India ended in 1858. Finally, India became an indendent republic along with the creation of Pakistan.

In the end, one wonders how Hinduism survived despite an assault of over one thousand years. Perhaps, this is the reason why terrorist orgnizations like LeT and ISI see India as an unfinished business. They will continue to bleed India in whatever fashion they can until their ultimate goal is met.

You may also want to read the attached artcile (Why India is not a Secular Country) in the left leaning Outlook magazine.

This is what I call stealth attack. This artcile is pointing to the beginning of a movement (supported by the left-leaning press) that will try to erase in whatever fashion possible public display of Hindu traditions. This plays well into the hands of fundamentalist Christians as well. After all, one thing Islam and Christianity agree on is that Hindus worship "wrong gods" and that must be stopped!

Om Shanti.
