A team of Union health ministry recently visited the state to review the condition of neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and sick newborn care units (SNCUs) in Bihar.

Four government medical colleges across the state -

1  Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH),
2 Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH),
3 Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and
4 Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), Bhagalpur - have NICU.

NICU is a level-3 unit for newborns referred for super specialty treatment while SNCU is a level-2 unit. The state government plans to open SNCUs in all the 38 districts of the state. Seven SNCUs have become functional. The level-1 units cater to primary healthcare of newborns. At present, there are 149 first referral units in the state.
The team while visiting the NICU at PMCH and NMCH and the SNCUs in Vaishali, Madhepura, Supaul and Saharsa districts, made a few observations and suggestions to improve their functioning.
, HoD of paediatrics, NMCH, Dr Arun Kumar Thakur said, "While visiting the SNCUs, the team made some recommendations and urged the hospital authorities to perform well throughout the year after which they can approach the state government for the units upgrade. At NMCH, the team members suggested the authorities to maintain separate records of out-born and inborn patients admitted to the hospital, Dr Thakur said, adding the team was apprised of some practical difficulties in doing so which included shortage of trained nursing staff and doctors.
The team members also pointed out the lack of provision for handing or taking over the nursing staff. Meanwhile, the doctors at the NMCH told the central team members to write to the Unicef, which has been supporting the newborn units, about its findings.
