This is the double standard of Mr Advani. When he is in power, he instructs his minister to escort terrorists, terrorists dare to attack parliament and as soon as he is out of throne, he changes his tone. He goes to Jinnah's mazar and what did he say there everybody knows.

Talk about ourselves, dont cite what "great" leaders said.

Many of us believe that 'deterrence' as follows will reduce crime.

The ENRON CEO got 24 years jail. But Ramlinga Raju might end up in 7 years of max. 10 years.

These perpetrators compares the punishment Vs crime before doing it.

If we opt for a severe punishment system like Saudi Arabia, crime rate will be far far less.

It is not only right of Afzal to appeal; it had repercussions as well and every terrorist will expect that favor - 'mercy' after knowing committing the crime.

Advani favours death sentence for rapists

NEW DELHI: With angry members in the Lok Sabha demanding that rapists be awarded capital punishment, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani told the
House on Tuesday that while the government endorsed this suggestion, a final decision could be taken after evolving a political consensus on the issue.
The state governments and political parties would have to be consulted before the Centre could enact a law to this effect, Advani told the members, who expressed outrage at the increasing atrocities being committed against women and decried the helplessness of the state in curbing these crimes. They demanded stringent punishment for those found guilty of rape.
``I feel the punishment for rape should be death. However, I would like to get the point of view of the political parties and the state governments in this regard,'' he said in his intervention during question hour.
Advani said several members had pointed out that a person found guilty of murder was hanged and though rape was a far worse crime, no such punishment was meted out to the culprit.
He recalled that he had supported such stringent punishment for rapists as far back as 1998, but several state governments and women's organisations had objected to this proposal on the plea that this could actually endanger the life of the victim.
Earlier, the House witnessed an uproar as angry members drew attention to the prevailing environment in which women did not feel safe. They demanded that the state take steps to provide adequate protection to women and laws regarding rape be amended to make them more effective.
The question was raised by Renuka Chaudhary (Congress) who made a strong plea for death penalty for rapists. An agitated Chaudhary, who was clearly unhappy with the way rape cases are being handled, wanted to know the problem in implementing laws on prevention of atrocities against women.
TOI COMMENT
How would this law take care of the abysmal rate of conviction in rape cases? Besides, a harsher penalty is not necessarily a better deterrent. What is required is more effective policing and investigation, speedy trials and a gender-sensitive judiciary.

She said the manner in which the reservation Bill, providing 33 per cent quota for women in elected bodies, had been put on the backburner indicated the male mindset.
Her party colleague, Margaret Alva, expressed concern over the increasing incidents of rape, stating: ``The way women are being raped, hope we are safe at least in Parliament.'' Renuka Singh (Samata Party) drew attention to trauma that rape victims had to suffer and pleaded for job reservations for them. Ramdas Athawale (Independent) suggested that POTA, the new law to deal with terrorists, be used against rapists.
In his reply, minister of state for home I D Swami said it was incorrect to say that the government was not sympathetic to the cause of women. In the case of rape laws, he said, the Centre had recently amended the Evidence Act under which the character of a rape victim could not be the subject of cross-examination.
Giving details of the measures initiated by the government to protect women, he said it had set up police stations manned by women and constituted a cell to deal with crimes against women.

Ok, in this case, you are waiting for their conviction. But you cant apply similar yardstick for Afzal, whose file has been pending President office for mercy. I am not saying that he should not be hanged. he must be but if our constitution gives him this right, let him try this also.

For Your Information: About 1000 people are arrested already and we are not justifying the crime.

If you elect inefficient Governments like Lalu, Naveen, Hamas, Manmohan  - you have to read about such incidents.

But if you elect Governments like current Israeli, Bush, Nitish Kumar - feel proud

Nun identifies rape accused during identification parade

Cuttack (PTI): More than four months after being allegedly raped during the unrest in Orissa's Kandhamal district, a Catholic nun on Monday identified two persons for their involvement in the incident, police said.

The 29-year-old nun, who attended the test identification parade of accused persons held at Choudwar jail near here, identified two persons from among those lined up for the exercise, a senior crime branch officer said. While 10 people had been arrested in connection with the case, 80 others were also presented before the nun during the parade, sources said, adding the exercise continued for about 90 minutes.

She first spotted four persons from among the 10 arrested men and finally zeroed in on two of them, they said. The much-awaited parade was held in the high-security jail after the nun arrived there escorted by crime branch sleuths including a lady police official and accompanied by three other women, believed to be church representatives.

Sub-divisional judicial magistrate of Cuttack Sadar, P K Das, was also present during the parade, they said. Though the parade was to be held on Saturday, the authorities deferred the exercise till today citing "unnecessary media attention", they said.

The nun was allegedly raped at K Nuagaon in strife-torn Kandhamal during the Orissa bandh on August 25 after prominent VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati was gunned down on August 23 at his Jalespota ashram in the district.

Though the nun had alleged in the FIR lodged at Baliguda police station on August 26 that she had been raped by one person, she identified two youths during the parade, the official said, adding one of them could be the main accused, while the other might have assisted in the offence.

The 10 arrested people, who were lodged at the Baliguda sub-jail in Kandhamal district, had been earlier shifted to Choudwar jail for the parade. The accused were arrested last October.

Though a court in Baliguda had fixed dates for the parade twice earlier, the nun failed to turn up while seeking change of venue of the exercise saying she did not want to visit Kandhamal again. Her plea was heard by the Orissa High Court which allowed conduct of the parade at Cuttack.
