Restore the glorious history of the prestigious research centre A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies : Nitish Kumar

To restore the glorious history of the prestigious research centre the government has started efforts and ready to provide all the assistance. At a high level meeting, chief minister Nitish Kumar said he wants the social research and analytical works should be resumed at the institute.

A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies was established as an autonomous institution by an Act of the Government of Bihar. This institute started operation on October 8, 1964.

Its main Objectives are as follows:

  • to undertake teaching and research in social sciences
  • to undertake study of specific problems, if and when required by the State Government or the Central Government or any other agency
  • to provide for journals, books, pamphlets and such other materials as may be deemed necessary
  • to organise other allied activities
The activities of the Institute relate, in conformity to the objectives prescribed by the Act, to teaching as well as research. The teaching that the Institute provides relate mainly to Courses in Research and Methodology and Advance Courses on specific subjects.

From time to time eminent scholars are invited to deliver a series of specialised lectures which are in course of time published by the Institute. The Institute awards doctoral and post-doctoral scholarships in each discipline under the programme of ICSSR institutional fellowships.

The Institute has a well stocked specialised library with about 25000 volumes. The Institute subscribes to large number of research journals. The library has a rich collection of Government Reports and publications of U.N. and other agencies.


Kumar reviewed the working of the Institute and its vacant posts and directed the education department for filling the vacancies at the earliest. Recalling the 48 years of its works, the CM said the level of the research and analysis should be of high standard. "The Institute should stand up to the expectations of the government departments and other agencies which give it research job," he said.
The meeting was attended among others by chairman of the Board of administration of the Institute and former governor of Chhattisgarh and Tripura D N Sahay, education minister P K Shahi, chief secretary Navin Kumar and others.
The CM was informed about the functioning of the Institute. From time to time eminent scholars are invited to deliver a series of specialised lectures.
