Crude Birth Rate (CBR) of 26.3, Bihar ranks at the top among the nine surveyed states so far childbirths per 1,000 people is concerned.

First I would like to define "CRUD BIRTH RATE" ?

The Crude Birth Rate (CBR) is defined as “Number of live births per thousand population”. It is usually the dominant factor in determining the rate of population growth. Primary source of data for births and deaths is the registration of births and deaths under Civil Registration System (CRS) of the Office of Registrar General, India (ORGI). Since the reporting of births under CRS is not complete, ORGI estates CBR annually through Sample Registration System, a large scale demographic Survey Conducted by them

The Crude Birth Rate (CBR) and Crude Death Rate (CBR) are statistical values that can be utilized to measure the growth or decline of a population.

The Crude Birth Rate and Crude Death Rate are both measured by the rate of births or deaths respectively among a population of 1000. The CBR and CDR are determined by taking the total number of births or deaths in a population and dividing both values by a number to obtain the rate per 10000

For example, if a country has a population of one million and 15,000 babies were born last year in that country, we divide both the 15,000 and 1,000,000 by 1000 to obtain the rate per 1000. Thus the Crude Birth Rate is 15 per 1000.

The Crude Birth Rate is called "crude" because it does not take into account age or sex differences among the population. In our hypothetical country, the rate is 15 births for every 1000 people but the likelihood is that around 500 of those 1000 people are men and of the 500 who are women, only a certain percentage are capable of giving birth in a given year.

Crude Birth Rates of more than 30 per 1000 are considered high and rates of less than 18 per 1000 are considered low. The global Crude Birth Rate in 2005 is 20.15 per 1000.

In 2005, Crude Birth Rates ranged from 8.33 per 1000 in Germany to 51.33 in Niger. The CBR in the United States in 2005 was 14.14 per 1000. Many African countries have very high Crude Birth Rates and women in those countries have a high Total Fertility Rate, meaning they give births to many children in their lifetime.

Bihar tops in Crude Birth Rate in the country

According to preliminary figures of the Annual Health Survey (AHS) 2011-12, conducted in nine states of the country, Uttarakhand with a CBR of 19.1 and Odisha with 19.8 are the best performing states.
Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam have a lesser rate in comparison to Bihar.

CBR points to the success of family welfare and planning measures.

The data show that the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in Bihar stands at 52. Jharkhand has the best IMR at 38, while UP has the worst one at 70.

IMR denotes the number of children dying at less than one year of age per 1,000 live births during the reference period.

However, the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) or number of female live births per 1,000 male births in Bihar has increased from 919 to 923 during the baseline period of 2007-09.

Chhattisgarh has the best ratio at 951, while Uttarakhand is at the lowest rung with an SRB of 866.

The sex ratio in the age group of 0-4 years in Bihar has been pegged at 925, while it is 972 in Chhattisgarh and 875 in Rajasthan. The overall sex ratio here is at 951. It is the best in Odisha and Uttarakhand at 995, while Rajasthan has the most skewed one at 929.

The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) or the number of the death of expectant mother per 1,00,000 live births in Bihar is 294.

It has improved from 305 during the baseline of 2007-09. But, Uttarakhand has the lowest MMR of 162 among the nine surveyed states while Assam with 347 is the worst performer on this count.

Experts are of the view that MMR denotes the standard of medical facilities available to expectant mother, as well as, their health condition.
