Sir Ganesh Dutt Singh (1868–1943) was born in February , 1868, in the Patna district , of respectable middle class parents . He began to study English at the rather advanced age of eighteen. He passed the Entrance (or Matriculation) examination in the first division , 1891, at the age of twenty – three, and secured a monthly scholarship of Rs 10 and a silver medal for proficiency in Mathematics. In 1893 he passed the Intermediate Examination, and in 1895 he graduated himself. The Bachelor of Law degree he obtained in 1897, when he saw nearly thirty. After practicing for seven years in the District Courts, at Patna.
He enrolled as a VAKIL in the Calcutta High Court, in 1904. He practiced in that court , for nearly twelve years , till the establishment , in 1916 , of a High Court, at Patna, when he got himself enrolled as a VAKIL in the highest judicial tribunal of his native province. He was elected a member of the Bihar and Orissa Legislative Council in 1921 and selected as a Minister in 1923, by then Governor of Bihar & Orissa.
Ganesh Dutt had led a more or less uneventful life. Though he had practiced for twelve years in the Calcutta High Court, he had not attained in the profession a particularly prominent position. Even during the years that he practiced in the Patna High Court, from 1916 till 1923, He was not regarded amongst the front rank lawyers. It was only when he was appointed a Minister that the qualities, which made him so influential a member of the Provincial Government, were brought into relief.an Indian administrator and educationist. He did much to improve education and health services in the state of Bihar and Orissa in the pre-independence era. Dutt made generous donations from his earnings and personal property
for the development of educational institutions, such as the radium
institute in Patna Medical College, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, Ayurvedic College and schools for the blind and deaf.A short film based on the life and works of Dutt has been made by Prakash Jha
Dutt was Minister for Local Self Government in the British Government of Bihar one of the major public figures of the province of Bihar. Sir Ganesh Dutt had donated his house Krishna Kunj to Patna University to start the Patna University Institute of Psychological Research and Service, one of the oldest psychological service centres in Eastern India in 1945 at the initiative of Sir Chandeshwar Prasad Narayan Singh Sinha, who was the then Vice Chancellor of Patna University.Dutt saved nearly three-quarters of his salary each month for 14 years
to give it to various charities to benefit orphans, widows, and schools
in the state
He a took keen interest in Patna University's development. He donated some of his assets to the University and worked hard to
terminate the practice of appointing former judges as vice-chancellors.
Students, teachers, and bureaucrats in Patna and different places of Bihar on 10th. january 2013 observed the
145th birth anniversary of educationist Sir Ganesh Dutt at various
function organized by different groups across the city.
Bharatiya Nritya Kala Mandir, chief guest and
former Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Anand Shankar paid rich
tribute to the educationist. He was joined by a number of teachers and
senior officials including Baleshwar Sharma and B. N. Singh.
In his speech, the former DGP said that Sir Dutt was a man of many
talents who not only served the country as an enlightened politician but
also as the one who understood the importance of education in one's
life.
Retired IAS officer Ram Updesh Singh, to mark the event, released a
memento highlighting the life and works of the man who, he said, did not
keep anything for himself, and gave all to various societies and
trusts.
Not too far away from the school in Kadam Kuan named after Sir Ganesh
Dutt, students, teachers, and politicians, including Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) state president Dr. C. P. Thakur and BJP legislator Arun
Kumar Sinha, at a function held at the Congress Maidan, placed flowers
at the statue of one of the most noted educationists Bihar has ever
produced.
Shahi is grandson of Sir Ganesh Dutt and has been associated with the
Congress for 35 years. He was also treasurer of BPCC. Hira of Barbigha
is the grandson of first Bihar CM S K Sinha. They said that they had
joined JD(U) sometime back in the presence of CM Nitish Kumar during his
Vikas Yatra at Barbigha in Munger. Both denied that they aspire to
contest elections.
