[madad-bihar-2008] briefing of discussion wth Balaji today

Hello Rashim and Priya;

I just talked to Balaji. He suggetsed that the medical work should be considered with two emphasis: 1. Basic Medical Need of treating acute diseases/attending to more urgent illnesses like diarrhoea, dysentry, pneumonia/cold (as the weather is changing, many of infectious in origin) and 2. long term invlovement with special focus to women's and children's health which actually a very much neglected area and not yet explored.

One important aspect is also malnutrition in children with possibly forecasting the deficinecy states based on the assessment of current diet deficiencies and addressing preemptively with fortification, vitamins etc. He also felt that there would be many patients with chronic medical diseases like DM and HTN but we may not have resources to address those now. Thus, this 2 pronged approach either can be taken independently or staged. Also, basic support like clarifying water in absence of ability to boil (and I would also add using antibacterial gels to prevent communicable disease) should be addressed.

Government camps have been providing medical care in a more centralized fashion but villagers from distant areas have not been able to get help and so mobile medical camps in make shift tents/venues should be planned. They were able to get 7 to 10 doctors from Chennai and Patna and also he explained the concept of RMPs but felt that training of new health volunteers in from of community health workers, although doable long term project, may not be suitable for more immediate work. Same is for medicines from LOCOST, again can be ordered but may take longer. (I'll also check both these issues with TRU-Trust for Reaching the Uncreached-doctors & locost who have decades of experience to see what can be done in medium term as a way out and if/how it can be accomplished).

I will follow up with Dharmendraji as well as Ashish/Kamayani/Dr. Shakeel when they get some time after their Padyatra.  If any of you speak to them pl share with them my proposed trip & gist of this discussion with Balaji.

I have not heard from Vivek yet, so if you could get in touch with him please ask about his availability/days.

Thanks.

Urvi.
