PATNA: Artistes from across the country celebrated the World Dance Day on Sunday by presenting various dance forms ranging from Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Rajasthani and Bihari to modern jazz, salsa and contemporary ones at many venues in the city.
On the occasion, art, culture and youth affairs department along with Surangan, Patna, organized a classical dance programme at the Bhartiya Nritya Kala Mandir, which was inaugurated by dance guru Vishwa Bandhu, who is also a 'Tagore award' winner for his oriental dance form.
The highlight of the event was a ballet, 'Bihar Darpan', choreographed by Vishwa Bandhu and Tanveer Akhtar. Choreographer Jitendra Kumar, musician Sitaram Singh and lyricist Shanti Jain were the other contributors to the ballet that mesmerized the audience.
The programme started with an Odissi dance performance choreographed by Tamaal Patra. It began with 'mangalacharan', that was performed with hands joined in front as if in greeting, while the recital continued with 'vatu' dance which paints the entire gamut of Odissi dance.
Later, a Surangan team took over the stage presenting Bharatnatyam, choreographed by Sudipa Ghosh, with 'Ganesh kirtan' and 'shlokam'. The presentation of famous Bihari folk dance - 'jhoomar' and 'jhijiya', choreographed by Soma Chakravarti - and Rajasthani folk dance and Rabindrik dance, both choreographed by Sudipa Ghosh, also received much appreciation of the audience.
Bihar Sangeet Kala Akademi also organized a two-day dance festival at Premchand Rangshala, which was inaugurated by art and culture minister Sukhda Pandey. Various artistes from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Varanasi along with local artistes took their chance at the stage, paying their tribute to Jean-Georges Noverre, whose birthday is celebrated as the World Dance Day.
The function was marked by the performances of Priya Venkataraman, a well-known younger generation Bharatnatyam dancer, along with the famous exponent of Odissi, Kavita Dwibedi, who is known for her versatile dance style and excellent acting, winning plaudits from the audience. Kathak dancers Shikha Khare, who is known for her extraordinary calibre of blending kathak with various forms of music, Punita Sharma and Sushmita Chaterjee wowed the audience with their spellbinding performances.
Besides this, students of 'Ninad', an organization dedicated to music and dance, also enthralled the audience at the Patna Museum auditorium on Sunday. Altogether nine dance performances were performed here, including 'Ganesh vandana' and 'sarangam' presented in kathak form. They also presented a fusion dance along with 'do tatrana'. At the function, Sushmita Chaterjee of Lucknow Gharana took over the stage with her Kathak performance and received much admiration from the audience.
Other than this, Ninad also presented some modern dance performances giving full meaning to the World Dance Day. These included Latin salsa, pump jazz and contemporary dance that collected the maximum applause of the audience.
