outsource sanitation job issue : PMC

PATNA: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) will soon issue fresh tenders for outsourcing the sanitation work in the city. The civic body plans to issue tenders for all the 72 wards in the municipal area.

"We are planning to float a fresh tender in the next few days for outsourcing the sanitation work," said Afzal Imam, the PMC mayor.

Till such time that the tenders are awarded, the corporation would continue to clear garbage in the city with the help of its 5,000 permanent sanitation workers, said Imam.

Earlier, a company, A2Z Infrastructure, had been entrusted with the task of sanitation in nine wards of the city. However, the company stopped work about six months back as the PMC failed to clear its dues of over Rs 5 crore despite several assurances. The municipal corporation later issued tender, but it was cancelled due to objection raised by the urban development department.

After A2Z ceased operations, the PMC took up the task of sanitation work in the nine wards in its own hands. But city denizens have been complaining of poor sanitation in different parts of the city. They complain that garbage heaps emitting stench can be found across the city.

Sonali Singh, a resident of Kankarbagh, said, "We pay tax to PMC to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. But the garbage bins are not being cleared regularly at least from our area." But PMC commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pal claimed that "garbage bins are being cleared on a regular basis".

Poonam Singh, PMC councillor of ward number 44, said, "The corporation cannot lift garbage from door-to-door. Citizens, too, should take initiative to keep the city clean and garbage-free."

Some denizens were furious to know that the PMC was again going to outsource the sanitation work. But Pal defended the decision on the grounds of efficient work and profitability of the corporation.
