PATNA: Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad here on Thursday inspected the work at Jayaprakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences (JPNAIIMS), one among the six AIIMS coming up in the country, and reviewed its status.
After inspecting the institute under construction, he said: "I have directed the officials concerned to complete the unfinished work in two-three months so that the academic session could begin this year," the minister said. He, however, said the hospital could function from 2013 as it would take time to make it operational."
"We have to be fully satisfied before taking a decision in this regard, so I have personally come here to give a last push to the project," Azad said, adding directions have been issued to start work in even two-three shifts, if necessary.
Azad, who was in Bhubaneswar recently and whose next stopover will be Bhopal where he will inspect the under construction AIIMS, said: "The Union health ministry will take a decision whether to start the institute this year or not, only after completing the inspection work of all the six new AIIMS coming up in the country." The Union government in 2004 had announced setting up of six AIIMS-like institutes in Patna, Bhopal, Bhuvaneswar, Jodhpur, Raipur and Rishikesh.
The Union minister praised chief minister Nitish Kumar for taking personal interest in the project. Kumar had recently visited the JPNAIIMS site and had given directives for its early completion.
Azad, during his visit to the JPNAIIMS site, said that he was satisfied with the quality of materials used in construction work. He, however, warned the contractors, saying penalty would be imposed on them if work is not completed on time. If they complete their work on time, the government would reward them, he added.
"Another central team would visit Patna within a week. If required, I will visit Patna again," the minister said.
