Bangalore: 18-year old Aman Raj, the golf phenom from Patna, finally broke out on Friday and captured the prestigious Usha IGU Karnataka Open Junior Golf championship held in Bangalore.
Aman, a student of the Central School on Bailey Road Patna, beat his nearest rival Yashash Chandra by one stroke shooting 271 nine-under par over a period of four days.
Held at the Clover Greens Golf Course, a Par 70 course in Bangalore between May 22 and May 25, Aman shot a 2 under 68 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he scored an even par 70 putting him on the 9th place on the leader.
Things, however, started to change on Thursday when Aman sinked 5 birdies and a spectacular eagle on Par 5 12th hole, along with two bogies on the way to 18, occupying the top position on the leaderboard at -7.
Shubhankar, Abhishek, Piyush (all from Delhi), Prakhar Asawa (Jaipur), and S. Srinivasan (Chennai) were just one stroke behind Aman going into the final round on day four.
On Friday, Aman shot a respectable 2 under (68) while repeating his eagle on Par 5 12th thus taking away the trophy with a final score of 271 (-9) beating Yashash Chandra and Prakhar Asawa by one stroke.
Had he missed the final birdie on the last and final hole on the fourth and final day of the tournament, the three – Aman, Yashash, and Prakhar would have gone for a three-way playoff.
This is the first major victory for the young golfer who plays at
Patna Golf Club under the guidance of his father and coach Shashi Raj
Sinha.
"Aman is young and is full of energy. This win at Bangalore is
certain to give a boost to his confidence," the proud dad said. Ruma
Sinha, Aman's mom, also was elated by her son's success saying she
couldn't wait for Aman to return home so they could celebrate his first
major victory with other family members. It may be recalled that recently Aman also represented India at the Asian Junior Golf Team Championship held in Malaysia.
