2 DPRs for river linking projects in Bihar ready

PATNA: Bihar has made strides in interlinking of rivers and its work was appreciated at the meeting of the National Water Development Agency (NWDA) held in New Delhi on Saturday. In fact, the NDWA, which was formed in 1982 with the original mandate of orchestrating inter and intra linking of rivers, made its first achievement when it finalized two detailed project reports (DPRs) of interlinking of rivers in Bihar. The state has proposed seven more interlinking projects.
Bihar water resources development (WRD) minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary told TOI from Delhi that the Union water resources ministry appreciated the work of river linking in Bihar, saying it was way ahead of other states. The NWDA had accepted 30 projects of interlinking of rivers in the country but most of them were still in pre-feasibility and preliminary stages. "I asked Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal for the preparation of preliminary project report (PPR) of the state's seven other river linking proposals," Chaudhary said.
The two river interlinking project DPRs finalized are for Burhi Gandak-Noon-Baya-Ganga project and Kosi-Mechi project. The second project, when completed, will create irrigation potential of 2.5 lakh hectares. Another proposal is for Barh-Nawada pump canal scheme which will create irrigational potential for over 7 lakh hectares and cater to the needs in Patna, Nalanda, Nawada and other adjoining districts,

 he said.
Chaudhary said flood control was also an objective of interlinking of rivers. "We have urged the Centre to arrange 100% funding for the projects since coping with flood is beyond control of the state," he said.

The WRD minister also said he has been invited to attend the India Water Week events from April 10 to 14 in New Delhi. At this important function, Chaudhary added, water management experts and hydro scientists from 40 countries will participate. The function will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Apart from the minister, WRD principal secretary Afzal Amanullah and other officials attended the NDWA meet.
